MSU community hosts 3rd annual student memorial service

EAST LANSING, Mich.(WLNS) – On Friday, the MSU Office of Student Affairs and Services hosted the 3rd Annual Student Memorial Service to honor the lives of 8 students who passed away in the 2015-2016 academic year.

About 200 family members, friends and students attended today’s event outside the MSU Office of Student Affairs on campus.

Friday’s ceremony highlighted themes of peace, awareness and unity among MSU students and faculty in the community.

The ceremony also comes just days after police discovered the body of Patrick Kegan Cochrane, a MSU student who had been missing since Saturday.

It was a day of remembrance Friday at Michigan State to honor those whose lives were cut short by tragedy.

“Each of these students however short their time might have been at Michigan State made an impact and mark on Michigan State and they’ll forever be a part of Michigan state,” said Michigan State President Lou Anna K. Simon.

In total, 8 MSU students were included in Friday’s memorial.

The newest name added to the list, Patrick Kegan Cochrane.

His body was discovered on campus on Wednesday. Cochrane had been missing for several days.

“It’s really nice I think its important for the community to come together especially in such tough times like this,” said MSU student Kelsey Bouteiller

Once a Spartan always a Spartan. It was a common theme at  Friday’s memorial.

“We want the MSU community to know even when our students pass they are still part of the MSU family,” said Allyn Shaw of MSU Student Affairs and Services.

And it is that family that offers resources and services to students whenever they need a helping hand and for whatever the reason.

“It’s really important for everyone to come together and understand there are other answers and there are plenty of resources available on campus and it’s just important to get the word out and spread it more,” said  Bouteiller

Friday’s memorial also included a tree planting ceremony on campus, forever honoring the 8 MSU lives lost in the 2015-2016 academic year.
