UPDATE: Michigan legislature passes “revenge porn” ban; heads to Snyder’s desk now

UPDATE April 14 (2:00 p.m.) – Legislation that bans cyber revenge in Michigan is on its way to Governor Snyder’s desk for his signature.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Rick Jones, would make cyber revenge a misdeameanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both.

“Cyber revenge isn’t about art or speech or even sex — it’s about using the power of the Internet to destroy someone’s life,” said Jones. “With these bills, we are taking a stand on behalf of these victims that cyber revenge will not be tolerated in the state of Michigan and providing authorities with tools to help stop the crime and prosecute the oppressors.”

Legislation meant to criminalize posting sexually explicit images on the Internet without the depicted person’s consent soon will be on its way to Gov. Rick Snyder.

The House on Wednesday unanimously approved a pair of bills to subject offenders to fines. The Senate passed the bill previously.

Sponsors of the legislation who want to stop “cyber revenge” or “revenge porn” say the practice is often meant to shame or humiliate the person depicted, and add it can harm their reputation.

Democratic Sen. Steve Bieda of Warren and Republican Sen. Rick Jones of Grand Ledge sponsor the bills.

The state Senate passed a similar package in 2014 but it stalled in the House.
