Lansing Police get camera ready

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – The next time you run in to a Lansing police officer, you might be on video.

The city and police department plan to announce the roll out of body cameras at a Thursday press conference.

Police Chief Mike Yankowski told 6 News This Morning anchor Chivon Kloepfer earlier this year that the department was going to get 120 cameras.

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero told a crowd the cameras were just around the corner in his State of the City address last month.

“It’s going to validate the work that our men and women in the Lansing Police Department do every day, that we’re not afraid of the technology, we embrace the technology and I think it’s a community tool that’s going to show again that day in and day out, good work that our police officers do,” Yankowski after the mayor’s speech. “It will help us with prosecutions; it will also keep the behavior of not only our police officers, but our community, in check.

The press conference is set for 11 a.m. We will be there tell you more about the development on 6 News at Noon and throughout the day on and in our evening broadcasts.
