Student engineers building Breslin bridges

EAST LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Teams of intercollegiate engineers from Michigan and Ohio are building 21-foot steel bridges inside the Breslin Center.

It’s all a “home game” for the Spartans as MSU hosts the American Society of Civil Engineers 2016 North Central Student Conference.

The bridges arrive on site in three-foot long pieces and have to be put together during the timed competition without stepping in an imaginary river.

Organizers say it’s not just about coming first. “The main goal is to work as a team, it’s not necessarily who comes in first place or last place but you learn something that you could apply to your career, hopefully,” said conference chairman Patrick Schwyn.

The second part of this event, a concrete canoe competition set for Saturday, was cancelled due to weather.
