UPDATE: 12:00 p.m. – Hundreds of police officers gathered to mourn the death of a Virginia state trooper and former Jackson police officer who was killed by a gunman at a bus station.
Virginia State Police say about 20 state police agencies from across the country were represented at the funeral for Trooper Chad P. Derymyer on Tuesday.
More than 3,000 people were at the ceremony at the Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton.
Alabama State Trooper Jason Fox called Dermyer a “true American hero.” He said he came to the ceremony to show Virginia State Police and Dermyer’s family that they have support throughout the country.
Authorities say Dermyer was fatally shot by James Brown III at the Greyhound bus terminal in Richmond on Thursday.
A private burial in Gloucester County followed the funeral.

HAMPTON, VA. (WLNS) – Friends, family and law enforcement personnel, including some from mid-Michigan, are remembering the life of Virginia State Trooper Chad Dermeyer.
Funeral services for the former Jackson police officer will take place this morning in Virginia.
Dermeyer was shot and killed during a training exercise last week at a crowded Greyhound bus terminal in Richmond.
