DEWITT, Mich (WLNS) – “I like it. You want it shorter? Aww.”
Many people looking to get a fresh haircut for the spring also got to help a family in need today.
“Say thumbs up! She’s like it’s hard to do with this thing on my thumb.”
10-year-old Miranda Huntoon has been through a lot, and those around her feel her struggle.
“It’s been really hard on the immediate family as well as family and friends trying to help,” Miranda’s cousin DJ Lambert said. “She’s spent all of her life in and out of hospitals trying to survive.”
Mom Erika Huntoon says she didn’t know her daughter was sick until she was 4-months-old.
“They told us she probably wouldn’t live to see her second birthday,” Huntoon said.
Family members say she’s a miracle, but it’s taken a toll on those closest to her.
”She needs a lot more equipment now and she requires a lot more care and all that stuff,” Huntoon said.
She recently had surgery to insert a breathing tube into her neck.
Frequent hospital visits to Ann Arbor become increasingly difficult and expensive.
“We’re just here to try and help them out, try and raise some more money for them trying to get em,” Lambert said.
“Back and forth to Mott’s Children’s Hospital from our house and that’s usually like almost a two-hour drive with her,” Huntoon said.
A strong support system for her other two boys, and community support helps her get through it all.
“I mean the way that the community has stepped up to support us and our family and everything is, there are no words to express how much it means to us,” Huntoon said.
Family friends say it takes a strong woman like Erika to take care of Miranda like she does.
“Sad thing to see her go through the things she has but she is one strong little girl. One very strong little girl.”
And a strong girl that is receiving even stronger support.
