Police and restaurant owners gear up for St. Patrick’s Day and NCAA Tournament

(WLNS) – East Lansing is preparing for a busy weekend with St. Patrick’s Day and the NCAA Tournament.

“This is our biggest day of the year so we’re all in, we’re excited,” Dublin Square General Manager Don Tyler said.

Tyler expects a line to close 400 people outside the restaurant before 7 a.m. tomorrow, but they aren’t the only ones stepping up forces for the busy days ahead.

“We’ve got extra overtime patrols coming in tomorrow to work, up through 3 a.m. in the morning,” East Lansing Police Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth said,

Michigan State Police made more than 2,000 drunk driving related arrests last March.

“We want to reduce the amount of those incidents because people out drinking and driving can cause accidents, they can have a significant impact on their future,” Jackson Post State Police Lt. Kyle Bowman said.

Police recommend using the buddy system while out enjoying the holiday and tournament, and to call police if someone is in medical danger.

“We don’t want people to be scared to call us, we encourage them to,” Wriggelsworth said.

The main piece of advice police have to offer is to not drink and drive.

CATA will be offering free rides, and there are several cab services available through the night.

As excited as restaurant owners are for the days ahead, they advice people to drink enough water, eat food, and of course, have fun.

“I want everyone to have the best time, I just want everyone to be safe,” Tyler said.

A DUI in Michigan can cost the driver around $10,000, and can result in close to 100 days in jail.
