Controversial Lansing club closing its doors

LANSING, MI (WLNS) – We have an update on a story 6 News first told you about over the weekend. It involves a Lansing night club brawl, where three men were shot on Sunday, March 13.

On Monday 6 News told you about city officials trying to shut down Fahrenheit Ultra Lounge in South Lansing.

But the club owner says he already has plans to close Fahrenheit this weekend.

“I’m not promoting violence. It’s promoting good music and good entertainment,” said Germaine Redding, the owner of Fahrenheit Ultra Lounge.

Good vibes and good times, that’s what Redding always hoped his club would be.

Instead, his club has been a hot-spot for crime in South Lansing – with police responding to nearly 60 calls there since January 2015.

Redding says that’s why he’s closing up shop this weekend.

“That’s not why I’m in this. And obviously the city – they don’t want it,” Redding said.

The city of Lansing has urged the club several times in the past to improve security.

And though Redding says he’s tried, Lansing City Council member Carol Wood says it’s not enough.

“What preventative measures were put in place before, they’re not working,” Wood said.

Wood says safety is the city’s number one priority.

And following Sunday’s shooting, Lansing city officials announced plans to try to shut the club down.

But by that point, Redding had already decided to close Fahrenheit’s doors for good.

In a post on his personal Facebook early yesterday, he said he wanted to, “leave on my own terms and not spend my time fighting a losing battle.”

“If, you know, the violence continues, someone getting hurt takes the fun out of it,” Redding said.

And Redding says he has a new mission.

“Let’s focus on what the real issue is – is the gun violence.”

To raise awareness about the issue, Redding will host an anti-gun rally Thursday night in the Fahrenheit Ultra Lounge parking lot — which is located at 68-0 South Cedar Street.

And at the rally, he plans on making a public statement about his decision to close his club.
