(WLNS) – It went down to the wire but the Michigan State Spartans defeated the Maryland Terrapins 64-61 to earn a berth in the Big Ten title game.
MSU at times had double-figure leads during the game but Maryland chipped away at the lead, trailing by 60-57 with less than two minutes to play.
MSU turned the ball over with 44 seconds to play with a one point lead but Maryland was unable to convert.
Denzel Valentine hit a key one-and-one with 21 seconds to play, giving the Spartans a three-point lead 62-59.
Maryland cut into the lead 62-61 on the next possession with 13 seconds to play and no timeouts left.
Valentine was fouled on the inbounds play and missed his foul shot.
Maryland rebounded but missed a shot and Valentine was fouled on the rebound with less than one second to play.
He hit both ends of his one-and-one to give MSU at 64-61 lead.
From there MSU held on for the win.
The Spartans will now play the Purdue Boilermakers in the title game.
Purdue ripped the Michigan Wolverines 76-59 earlier today to earn their spot in the final tomorrow.
