Some ballot information can become public knowledge

MASON, MI (WLNS) – The Michigan primary is just days away, March 8.

But did you know that some of the information on your ballot becomes public information?

According to Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum, when you register to vote your request for a Democratic, or Republican ballot gets put into a computer system.

The ballot type, your name and address become public information in your ballot selection form.

“If anyone wants to obtain that, its lists, people that keep lists to identify voters that sort of thing, the type of ballot you request for the march presidential primary will be available” Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum.

Brendan Tully learned this information when he worked on a political campaign. According to him, knowing someone party is important for politicians.

“If you’re siding with one party, you’re not going necessarily try and approach a person that you know doesn’t vote for your political views.”

But even with Tully’s background, as a voter, he believes everything on your ballot should be private

“That should be their opinion or their view if they want to release it or not. It shouldn’t be public” Tully said.

But Lindsay Huddleston believes with social media finding someone’s political affiliation isn’t very hard, so he suggests that voters stay educated, and aware.

“Just know that people can send things to you that are politically motivated but it’s up to you to stay informed so you know how best to respond to it” State Director of Students First Lindsay Huddleston said.

Byrum assures the public that a person’s birthday, and who they vote for remain completely confidential.

She also adds, that having a voter’s address and name as public information, allows voters to call the Clerk’s office and ask questions over the phone.
