Courser and Gamrat could spend time behind bars

LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Former State Representatives Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat are facing some serious charges, and possible prison time.

“That no one, no one is above the law. Not even those who walk in the halls of power” Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said.

Todd Courser is facing 4 felony charges, one charge for perjury and three charges of misconduct.

“For lying under oath while testifying before the house select committee, he falsely stated that a staff member gave him the green light to forge his signature on house legislative proposals called blue backs.” General Schuette said.

The perjury charge is for violating oath and its punishable up-to 15 years in prison.

“When you are elected to serve, in any public office, you receive a special responsibility from people. It’s called trust, it’s called judgement, it’s called honesty. Representatives Courser and Gamrat sadly failed to serve their constituents in an honorable fashion.” Schuette said.

According to Bill Schuette, Cindy Gamrat also violated her oath, “these charges relate to lying to house office investigators and instructing a staff member to sign blue backs against house rules” Schuette said.

Gamrat is facing two charges of misconduct while in office.

If found guilty of misconduct the punishment could be up to 5 years per charge.

This means Gamrat could face 10 years if found guilty.

If Courser is found guilty for his charges he could face a total of 30 years in prison, 15 for perjury and 5 years for every misconduct charge.
