(WLNS) – This is 6 Sports Team of the Week night and this week’s pick is having a season much like it did last year, winning plenty of games while overcoming key injuries and hoping to finish off this season with another championship.
Football brings Ithaca most of the media attention but the Yellowjackets can hoop it up too.
Yes, Ithaca basketball gets the nod. 16-and-2 this season and the Jackets clinched a league title last night.
With a 71-57 home win over Carrollton, Ithaca clinched it’s fifteenth win on the year, and coach Jim Thompson says it was an important one. “Those kinda games are good because those type of teams are what you see come tournament time.”
After a disappointing exit in regionals last year, this Jackets team, featuring eight seniors, is hungry to go further this season.
“We just want to go as far as we can,” says senior forward Nicholas Radak. “It’s our last year, everyone has the same goal, we just want to get as far as we can and do as best as we can.”
Part of the Yellowjackets success on the hardwood this year could be attributed to Ithaca’s football team. Eight of the fourteen players playing basketball won a state championship just back in November.
“We know where each other are going to be, we know what to expect from each other so it’s just teammates, we know what to do,” says head coach Jim Thompson. “Success breeds success and you know obviously those kids are competing at a high level in the fall, you know our kids do not like to lose.”
And like the football team did, this Yellowjacket team hopes to end the season with a championship of it’s own.
“You know that’s a big motivation for us, trying to put something else up on those banners, the bottom line is the record speaks for itself,” says junior forward Levi Lehman. “If we can just continue to buy in to what we’ve preached all year, I think that the opportunities to compete at the highest level are going to be there.”
Congratulations to the Ithaca Yellowjackets, our 6 Sports Team of the Week.
