Free tax help and financial guidance in Lansing

LANSING, MI (WLNS) – It’s Show Me the Money Day in Lansing, and with tax season approaching…

“Okay, may I see your social security card?”

Volunteers like James Eddy are preparing taxes for free for those who make less than $53,000 a year.

“What we’re hoping to do is about 100, 125 people will save approximately 15,000 dollars in tax preparation fees,” United Way Chief Financial Officer James Eddy said.

Lansing resident Michael Palmer comes every year because it’s free and a great help.

“It’s another 100,125 dollars you don’t have to give away come tax year,” Palmer said.

But while some volunteers help file taxes, others provide financial guidance.

“Would my grand kids, could I help them with this?” Lake asked.

Are here to help themselves and their families.

“This is my first time and I’m loving it,” Lake said. “They make you feel welcome and they’re very helpful,” Lake said.

With about 25 different vendors and non-profits represented,

“All these opportunities are available under one roof for free,” Consumers Energy Assistant Specialist Susan Gillius said.

Some are to here help people manage their energy bills while others have mental health in mind.

“We realize the importance of being not only financially well but mentally well as well as physically well,” Community Mental Health Executive Administrative Assistant Aleshia Echols said.

Organizers say it’s a one stop shop for those in need.

“All of this is just a big day where we can say this is the services that the community can provide. Come take advantage of it,” Asset Independence Coalition Executive Director David Reyes said.
