LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – He’s one of the winningest coaches in college basketball so it takes a lot to surprise Spartan head coach Tom Izzo.
But he was surprised this morning when a birthday cake was wheeled out to a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” during a “Coaches vs. Cancer” event at Auto-Owners Insurance.
Izzo turns 61 years old tomorrow.
The coach laughed as he cut the cake and handed out slices to equally surprised Auto-Owners associates.
The coach was at Auto-Owners to take part in the insurance company’s annual “Suits and Sneakers” day. Auto-Owners associates who chose to could donate $5 to wear tennis shoes with their regular work attire.
Coach Izzo, Sparty, members of the MSU Dance Team and members of the Auto-Owners executive team greeted associates this morning when they began their work day.
Associates were given stickers and a green and white “Celebrating Spartans” wristband as a thank-you gift from 6 News.
The money raised by Auto-Owners associates is being donated to the “Coaches vs. Cancer” campaign, part of the American Cancer Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches.
This is the eighth consecutive year Auto-Owners associates have taken part in the Suits and Sneakers Day. Associates in the Lansing-area and 25 other states where Auto-Owners is represented, and the company, which matches the donations from associates, have raised more than $180,000 since 2008.
