LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Clean water.
It’s a basic necessity that many in Flint don’t have.
Flint is only 70 miles away and for many Lansing families, that’s too close to sit and do nothing.
While more than 100 thousand gallons of water have been delivered, churches and volunteers are calling on Lansing to help.
“Thousands of people, especially children they need this water” Pastor Jacque McDaniel of Missionary Baptist Church said.
From the clergy to local businesses, many locations across Mid-Michigan are offering a helping hand, by allowing people to drop water bottles at their location to go towards Flint.
“The kids are what I’ve been really thinking about lately and with that high levels of lead in their blood, we cant risk them getting more of that unsafe water” Jessica Heksem said.
Heksem started a Facebook page just three weeks ago called ‘Water Drive for Flint”.
Heksem and volunteer Rachel Wach have collected more than 18 thousand gallons of water.
“It’s about the community, and children and families. That’s where my heart is. I can’t be up there every day but I can do this” Rachel Wach said after picking up more than 50 dozen packages of water bottles.
But jugs and water aren’t the only way to donate. Lansing mom Carrie Davis has raised more than $17,000 on a go fund me account.
According to Davis, she’s used that money to deliver trucks of water weekly.
“Last week I donated 2 trucks which were about 75,600 bottles of water” Davis said.
While pastors from the Union Missionary Baptist Church set a goal of more than 20 thousand bottles of water. There was one thing all volunteers agreed on helping those in need is what the community is all about.
If you would like to donate, there are more than 20 businesses available for water drop offs.
