President Obama signs emergency declaration over Flint water crisis

FLINT, Mich (WLNS) – Acting upon a request from Gov. Rick Snyder, today President Obama signed an emergency declaration that would make federal assistance available for Flint in dealing with the water crisis there.

According to our media partners at MLive, FEMA issued a statement today saying, “The President’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in Genesee County,”.

On January 14 Snyder asked President Obama to declare a federal emergency after the governor had issued a state emergency on January 5.

In today’s statement FEMA said it can provide assistance in the form of water, water filters, water filter cartridges, water test kits, and other necessary related items for a period of no more than 90 days.

We will update this developing story online and on 6 News tonight at 6 and 11.
