Executive Director apologizes for controversial AMBER Alert comments

LANSING, Mich.(WLNS) –  The Executive Director of the Michigan AMBER Alert Foundation is apologizing for her controversial comments on a social media site.

Karole White says she’s sorry after she publicly posted on WSJM’S Facebook page saying quote, “Omg, it just came across in a WEA on my phone at 2 am. Woke me up. What can I do about it in my jammies.? Gerrrrrr!”

Her post came after Michigan State Police sent out an Amber Alert early this morning for two young girls missing in Coloma, Michigan.

Many took offense to her comments calling them insensitive.

Police say the two girls were abducted by their father Alex Perez and were found in Colorado Friday morning.

The young girls Nova and Luna Perez.are currently in protective custody.

Their father has been arrested for kidnapping as well as double homicide in a related incident.

If you woke up overnight to a loud, blaring siren sound on your phone you weren’t alone.

“I had three friends visiting so they were like freaking out because they did not understand what was going on.”

“It’s always unsettling but those types of things happen i guess which is just really sad.”

The alert was so unsettling even Executive Director of the Michigan AMBER Alert Foundation, Karole White was unnerved by it.

“I’m afraid I reacted like a lot of people would react. i just woken up these are children that are missing in another city.”

But White says she had a change of heart.

“I know better than that and I know what it happens and I have all the sympathy in the world for amber alert.”

Sarah Krebs with Michigan State Police says Amber Alerts are crucial to finding missing and abducted children.

“We all know that we are very shorthanded these days and there are so many officers on the roads on a given time. You can see if pushed it out to the general public to help we have a much larger team of eyes looking for the kids.”

So the next time you hear an amber alert on your phone remember it’s because State Police needs your help.

“If we’re putting out an amber alert we are asking for your help and this child is  in extreme danger if we are waking you up in the middle of the night asking you for help.”
