ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (KRQE)- People all over New Mexico were very upset after seeing a video, caught by a home security camera, of a driver pulling onto an Alamogordo street and dropping a puppy off to fend for itself.
Since the video came out, many people have reached out to Kayla’s Promise, a local shelter, that took the dog in, hoping to adopt him.
One family did adopt the Pit-bull puppy. But just a day later, Tina McIntosh, the owner of the rescue, got a call from a Ruidoso man that made things more difficult.
McIntosh says the man sent her videos proving the dog was his. He says the pup was stolen from his home in Ruidoso.
He also recognized the driver and the car from his neighborhood and called Alamogordo police.
Police say the driver who dumped the dog claims he just found it, then let it go an hour away in Alamogordo. They were hoping someone would find the dog and give it a home.
That driver was cited for cruelty to animals.
Now the original owner wants his puppy back, but the family that has him now says their young children have fallen in love with him.
“It’s very, very hard, but she also realizes that this family also has a little girl that misses her puppy and that’s mainly why I think they came to the conclusion that they did,” said Mcintosh.
The family is giving the puppy up.
The shelter says this incident could have been avoided. The shelter is now working to find the family that adopted the dog another Pit-bull puppy.
