Psychologist explains why people buy lotto tickets

LANSING, MI (WLNS)-   And the winning numbers are

8, 27, 34, 4, 19 and Powerball number 10.

6 News spoke to a psychologist, who explains why people press their luck even if the odds are against them.

“It’s a lot of money yes it’s a lot of money” Donald Brown said.

Donald Brown puts two dollars on the line for the chance to win a much larger prize.

“I want to win and it’s a possible chance that I can win” Donald Brown said after buying a lottery ticket at Downtown Party Store.

According to Brown he buys various lottery tickets weekly. But with more than a billion in Wednesday’s jackpot, he can almost taste the possibilities.

“I picture me paying my bills off. I picture me getting a nice ride… Helping my son.” Brown said.

“‘When the lottery gets as big as it is now, reason and logic go out the window. Lotteries kind of specialize and marketing on hopes and dreams.” Dr. Sharon Hughes, Lansing Community College professor and psychologist said.

According to Hughes when you picture yourself winning the lotto your brain catches on, and self-visualization is the main reason why people buy.

“When we fantasize about going in and quitting out jobs and buying a house on the beach and all those things that we fantasize about the same area of the brain is activated if, as if we actually won the lottery so it kind of gives us the same psychological boost in that way as if we actually won.” Brown said.

“I want to win tonight! This is mine,” Brown said while he kissed his Powerball ticket.

As for Brown, the possibility of winning is enough incentive to try.
