Tighter gun control sparks strong responses on both sides

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – It is well documented that President Obama has been in favor of stricter gun control in the wake of multiple mass shootings across America.

There are some people who believe that tighter restrictions won’t matter.

“Stricter gun control isn’t going to stop any kind of terrorist action or stop any kind of criminal from robbing you or shooting you so why would we have stricter gun control if they’re out there?” asks gun owner Joshua Vaughn.

As of January 1, seven percent of Michigan adults have a Concealed Pistol License with a combined 17,722 adults in Ingham and Jackson County, so how do some feel about potential restrictions?

“He, like the rest of the people in the United States, are sick and tired of gun violence. We’re saying enough. And, any executive order that President Obama issues will be helpful,” says Linda Brundage of the Michigan Gun Control Coalition.

Other people disagree with the restrictions. “Stricter gun control just isn’t going to stop any kind of mass shootings. It’s just going to make us powerless. The people that actually abide by the laws, it’s just going to make us powerless and I disagree with that.”

Pro-gun restriction activists like Brundage believe people have the right to carry but it’s more about who should.

“What our legislators at both our state and federal level have failed to do, and that is make sure we have background checks on all gun sales. 90% of us want it. 90%. That’s big,” says Brundage.
