School’s list seeks to bring worthy words back from brink

DETROIT (AP) – A Detroit university says it wants to bring worthy words including “delectation” back from the brink.

The word meaning “pleasure and delight” is among 10 that comprise Wayne State University’s annual Word Warriors list.

The school’s 2016 edition of words that deserve to be used more often in conversation and prose was released Monday. It also includes “absquatulate,” ”anathema,” ”epigone,” ”puerile,” ”rumpus,” ”sockdolager,” ”sybaritic,” ”torpid” and “turpitude.”

Word Warriors is beginning its eighth year.

The list comes after Sault Ste. Marie’s Lake Superior State University last week released its 41st annual List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. That list seeks to scrap “presser” instead of press conference, “problematic,” ”break the Internet” and several others.

Both schools accept nominations online.
