LANSING, MI (WLNS) – A former Lansing resident pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to running a tax return scheme that allowed her to take $32,000 from the IRS.
According to the Dept. of Justice, 22-year-old Amanda Ely deceived people into providing their personal information by promising them free “stimulus money.”
The Dept. of Justice says she then used that information to file false tax returns, report undocumented income and abuse the Earned Income Tax Credit.
When citizens complained the Lansing offices of IRS Criminal Investigations and the FBI began investigating.
They had to issue more than 50 subpoenas to track down the money, which was sent to multiple bank accounts.
