LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – December’s unseasonable warm weather might be freezing holiday sales.

According to the National Retail Foundation, this year’s unseasonably warm weather has discouraged thousands of Americans from going to the mall to pick up their holiday gifts. As of last Wednesday, 90% of people still needed hadn’t finished shopping for Christmas gifts.

Now that the holiday’s just days away, many retailers are expecting shoppers to rush in to make up for lost time.

Ari Michaels of Longmeadow told 22News she thinks the warm temperatures are making it harder to get in the holiday spirit “I feel like everybody’s pretty upset about the weather, they feel like it’s too warm for Christmas and some people are having trouble getting in the holiday spirit,” she said.

The lack of Christmas weather isn’t just hurting holiday spirit, it could also be hurting sales.

Planalytics, a weather forecasting firm for retailers, says clothing stores have lost $343-million in sales compared to last year.

Longmeadow resident Megan Schwartz told 22News she has noticed the shopping rush has been dying down since Black Friday. “I think the stores are packed after Thanksgiving, but I bet a lot of people do put it off, hoping for snow,” she said.

But not everyone’s waiting for it to look like Christmas outside. Connecticut resident Rob Lavin said cutting it close to Christmas Day has become a tradition for him. “I would say that I’m usually a late shopper, but maybe it’s the nice weather. You can really get out and do more shopping, it’s fun,” he said.

There may be at least one perk to the warm weather. Many retailers have resorted to luring customers in by offering bigger discounts than usual.
