Warm temperatures lead to major road savings

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Thanks to an ‘El Nino’ weather pattern, the warm temperatures have been both a blessing and a curse.

The Ingham County Road Commission says it’s saving tens of thousands of dollars in road maintenance costs. Savings that may eventually be applied further down the road.

Here in Mid-Michigan it’s the land of green and white and this season road and maintenance crews are thanking they lucky stars they’re saving a lot of green and not seeing as much white.

That’s especially when it comes to salt.

“This year we’ve used about 52-thousand dollars worth, a typical December which is also what we used last year at this time was about 100-thousand dollars worth,” said Ingham County Road Commissioner Bill Conklin.

Officials say those extra savings can be used for road maintenance come this spring and summer.
“To do additional skip paving, patching chip sealing and other road maintenance activities to preserve the road surfaces, ” said Conklin.
WLNS Meteorologist Emily Wahls says a year ago today, it was sunny with a low of 18 degrees. Today the low is 43 degrees.
“It’s actually pretty neat because we’re having warming temperatures than average. Almost our whole entire November was above average. So far this December we’ve been above average, ” said Wahls.
Conklin says the warmer temps. give his crew more time to focus on other important road repairs.
“We’re able to do other work we need to catch up mainly get dead trees removed, tree trimming and other work like that we do in the spring when we’re not plowing snow,” says Conklin.
But don’t hold your breath. It’s still early and winter conditions could change drastically.
“The first day of winter is not until December 22, we still have a ways. We are still early in the game and things could change drastically,” said Wahls.
For now we can only hope mother nature doesn’t change it’s mind and start to blow tons of snow our way.
