Fans take to streets to celebrate Spartan win

EAST LANSING, Mich (AP/WLNS) – Within seconds of the Spartans defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes 16-13 to grab the Big 10 Championship fans poured into the streets in various parts of East Lansing.

Hundreds of people poured out of apartments in the Cedar Village area to celebrate.

There were scattered reports of small fires being set in streets but those were quickly extinguished.

The East Lansing Police Department reports eight people were arrested and 13 fires reported late Saturday and early Sunday — but damage wasn’t significant and no injuries were reported. Among the items set ablaze were couches, a giant stuffed animal and a dumpster.

Earlier today MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo addressed the crowd after the Spartan basketball team won in the Breslin Center.

Izzo told the crowd to not set any fires whether the football team won or lost.

Cedar Village has been the site of couch fires and other disturbances after Spartan games in the past.
