Michigan State University is three spots away from making the 2015 college football playoff.
That’s according to the rankings released today by the committee in charge of ranking the teams. It’s their first ranking of the year. The top four teams at the end of the year make the playoff.
Right now, the Spartans sit at #7.
The Clemson Tigers top the list. Louisiana State is #2. Ohio State, last year’s champions and the team that sits atop the AP and Coaches poll comes in at #3. Alabama, which is lead by former MSU coach Nick Saban, rounds out the top 4. Alabama made the playoff last year, as well.
Notre Dame came in at #5 and Baylor at #6. Then it’s Michigan State. TCU finished at #8 and a third Big Ten team – the Iowa Hawkeyes – came in 9th.
The undefeated Spartans came behind two one-loss teams – Alabama and Notre Dame.
The Spartans have a serious shot at finishing in the top 4. They play Ohio State on November 21st in Columbus. The winner of that game, assuming they run the table, will likely get an invite to the playoff.
