DETROIT (AP) – Authorities say a man stabbed and slashed two emergency medical technicians in Detroit while they were trying to help an injured woman.
The Detroit Fire Department’s interim Commissioner Eric Jones tells reporters the EMTs responded to a 911 call and were treating the woman for an injured ankle when the man attacked one of the EMTs. Jones says the other EMT tried to intervene and was attacked.
Jones says the attacker was agitated, but he didn’t know why. WWJ-AM reports he fled after the early Tuesday attack. He’s being sought.
Jones says the injuries to the EMTs, a man and woman, were “horrific” and they were “within inches of dying.” He says they’re hospitalized and need surgery.
Jones says he’s talking with police about ways to better protect first responders.
