TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) – A longtime quilting group at a Traverse City church will hit a significant milestone this month.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that about 12 volunteers at Bethlehem Lutheran Church will donate the group’s 12,000th quilt. The group has been at it for nearly 40 years. They meet weekly during the quilting season from September through June.
Many quilts they craft are sent to the ministry’s parent organization, Lutheran World Relief. That group distributes quilts to countries in need, including Lebanon, Jordan, Nicaragua and other areas attracting Syrian refugees.
The quilts are not just used as bed covers. Some are used as insulation for thin walls or room dividers.
Some quilts stay closer to home, helping those in need in the Traverse City area.
