NEWARK, Ohio (WCMH) — A Newark couple is facing child endangering charges after allegedly locking a six-year-old child in an unfinished basement for several months.
Joshua Bergeron, 38, and 34-year-old Angel Abram were arrested Tuesday and charged with felony child endangering.
According to court records, a Newark police detective and a Children Services case worker interviewed the six-year-old victim and his two older siblings.
Based off that interview, investigators said the child was repeatedly hit in the buttocks with a belt and locked in a small unfinished room in the basement. The child was routinely locked in that room for the majority of each day, according to court records.
Detectives said the child was forced to eat his meals by himself in the basement and was only permitted to use a “potty chair” normally used for toddlers. The child also had to bring the bucket of urine and feces upstairs and dump the contents in the toilet and clean the bowl himself, according to detectives.
Court records indicate Abram and Bergeron both provided taped confessions where they admitted to keeping the child locked up in the basement since the end of the last school year in May.
The couple is expected to be in court Wednesday afternoon.
