FBI warns college students of phone scam

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – It seems every week there is a warning about a phone scam making the rounds. The latest caution is coming from the FBI.

Agents are warning college students in Michigan about phone scammers that are attempting to pass themselves off as FBI agents or representatives of the US government.

The FBI’s telephone number even shows up on the caller ID.

The caller than says the student owes delinquent loans or dues, taxes or even overdue parking tickets.

According to the FBI the callers try to get personal information from the student.

In some cases they threaten arrest and will demand payment for the delinquent amounts.

The FBI reminds people that the agency does not call private citizens requesting money.

Agents also tell people to never give out personal information to callers that you do not know.
