ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – A proposed revision to the student sexual misconduct policy at the University of Michigan would allow students to appeal the school’s findings in sexual assault cases to an outside, independent arbitrator.
The proposed policy revision unveiled this week says that an external lawyer would not have connections to the university and would be able to agree with the findings, send the case back to an investigator for more work or set aside the findings.
The Detroit Free Press reports change would introduce a non-university employee into the process and address potential issues of fairness.
The revision is one in a series of changes that the Ann Arbor school is proposing to how it handles sexual assault cases on its campus. Forums are planned for comment before changes are finalized.
