Healthy Mouth Movement brings free dental care to veterans

LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Former Marine George Guenther always counted on quick thinking while out on duty and on Friday he didn’t think twice when local veterans were offered free dental care.

“For the average veteran there’s no program out there that’s paid for by the VA for their dental care,” said George Guenther, retired marine.

That’s because like millions of other Americans, veterans often struggle to find oral health care when they need it.

As of right now veterans aren’t offered dental benefits through the departments of Veteran’s Affairs.

That’s unless they’re 100 percent disabled, have a service connected dental disability or are a former prisoner of war.

“There’s lots of barriers for veterans and we can do an event like this and bring health care to them at no charge to them,” said Nicholas Miller, dentist, Aspen Dental.

Thanks to Aspen Dental, the Healthy Mouth Movement delivers free dental care to people in need across the U.S.

Launched in 2014, the program has served close to 3,000 patients via their Mouth Mobile.

“It has two full operatories in here, we can almost do any procedure we need to. Fully self-contained, it’s like a mini-little city in here, it’s great.”

This year dentists are focusing their efforts on our nation’s veterans.

“It’s important we take care of the urgent need , any pain they are in and make sure we take care of all their needs in a limited amount of time.”

Veteran’s needs like Guenther’s, who says he’s much better off thanks to dentists who care.

“My mouth is better, my teeth are better, my health is a lot better,” said George Guenther.

Organizers say Friday’s event was a success, 25 local veterans got free dental services. The Healthy Mouth Movement’s next stop is Madison, Wisconsin.
