CHARLOTTE, MI (WLNS) – Imagine coming home, to your dog swollen and beaten.
And only one person was home with the family pet.
That’s exactly what one Eaton county family faced when their daughter’s now ex-boyfriend was living with them last year.
After a visit with their vet, they reported the injuries to animal control.
Today after months in court, a twenty year old man is held responsible.
“The numerous broken ribs the removal of a lung, and especially from the testimony that we heard from the vet that, that is not an accident” Eaton County Prosecutor Adam Strong said in court Thursday morning.
Brennon Wood is sentenced to 90 days in jail and 3 years of probation after his ex-girlfriends Shih Tzu “Buster” was found with 7 broken ribs and a punctured lung.
“A defenseless animal, a small animal, severely injured life threatening injuries by the defendant” Strong said in court.
Eaton County Prosecutor Adam Strong said he believes this sentence is light.
“I asked for 6 months in jail, at the same time, I understand why the judge did it, there’s a lot that goes into sentencing Mr. Wood was a young man, and he has no criminal history. I think the court really felt that through the different programs they could do a lot to rehabilitate him that a prison sentence couldn’t have done.” Strong said.
Wood is not allowed to have any animals for the next 3 years, and is required to take a series of psychological courses. Attorney Michael Nichols said this is fair due to the root problem.
“I think it was the attack on the dog was a very strange way to try to control or attack a woman who he was in a relationship with at that time.” Michael J. Nichols of Nichols Law firm said.
Wood will receive credit for the 37 days he has already served in jail.
The owners of the dog hope this sentence will prevent a crime like this from happening again.
The 5 year old shi tzu is now at home with family, in good condition.
