LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Michigan drivers can now show proof of insurance on their phones during traffic stops, instead of having to carry paper proof.
Gov. Rick Snyder today signed legislation into law that gives drivers the option of using their cell phones or other mobile devices to show proof of auto insurance when asked by a police officer during a traffic stop.
Snyder said this is a step to modernizing government and make everyday life easier for residents.
The new law directs law enforcement officers to accept the electronic proof of auto insurance in place of paper proof of insurance.
It also prohibits officers from searching or manipulating the electronic device that is being used to show proof of insurance.
