LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – It’s 6 Sports Prep Player of the Week night and it’s another area football running back.
This is the year of the back in mid-Michigan and this week’s honoree is a ‘true’ Bulldog: Andy Ferguson.
Not bad for a kid who wasn’t even in the offensive game-plan to begin the game against Waverly.
With the Bulldogs down 21 points, junior back Andy Ferguson caught fire, running for 266 yards and 5 touchdowns, including the game-winner in the 4th quarter, completing an amazing comeback, 42-35 in a must-win CAAC Red contest.
Injuries have been a factor for Mason all season, but Ferguson rising to the occasion proves again how gritty these Bulldogs can be.
We asked him who told him those numbers and how he reacted. “Oh my gosh, I think it was, I think it was Coach VanHavel honestly as uh, just as we were meeting up down there at the end of the field,” said Ferguson. “I just couldn’t believe it. I’ve never had the experience like that, I’ve never rushed like that.”
“Two upbacks blocked very effectively so Andy just had to get up there and run,” said Mason coach Jerry VanHavel. “He ran well. I wasn’t aware of any of the numbers except the scoreboard and the clock until the end. Someone told me after what the numbers were and it’s a product of our entire offense doing a nice job.”
