LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A two-week blitz by state investigators has uncovered credit card skimmers in gas pumps across the state.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development began the sweep to locate and remove the skimming devices from Detroit to Lansing and Traverse City. They also searched from Grand Rapids to Saginaw.
At the end of the blitz a total of 12 skimming devices were found. At least three of the devices were found in Perry, Owosso and Grand Ledge. Nine were found by department investigators, two by local police officers and one was turned in by a station owner. All the devices were handed over to the U.S. Secret Service.
Credit card skimmers can’t easily be seen outside the pump. They are usually placed inside where the devices make a copy of the consumer’s card information.
Some things to remember to protect yourself from credit card skimmers at the pump:
– If you see something that doesn’t look right, notify the store clerk and pay inside
– Try to use the pumps closest to the store
– Monitor your bank accounts for unauthorized charges
