LANSING MI (WLNS) – Near the corner of Cedar and Jolly, balloons, flags, cards, and even a candle lye near the side of the road in honor of Dennis Rodeman.
As a circular pendant that says “Veteran”, sits on the corner, it reminds bystanders that Rodeman was not only a fire fighter, he was a veteran who fought in Iraq with the Marine Corp.
Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero said, there’s been an out pour of care and concern from people all over Michigan, so the city of Lansing and Fire Department officials say there is an official way you can help.
The City of Lansing, the International Association of Fire Fighters local 421 and the Lansing Fire department created an official go fund me page, were all proceeds go to Dennis Rodeman’s family, after the fire fighter was tragically killed by a hit -and-run driver Wednesday.
The official site is located at http://www.gofundme.com/LansingHero.
“Our feeling is, that there should not be financial burden in addition to the incredible emotional burden that they have to deal with.” Mayor Virg Bernero said as he explains the difficulty the Rodeman family will face.
Dennis Rodeman got married 2 months ago, and has his first child on the way.
Mayor Bernero says that supporting the child’s future is the least the city can do.
“We are looking ahead to that and saying we want to ease the burden on the family, today tomorrow and ten years from now” Bernero said.
The city’s campaign goal has been set at 50 thousand dollars, and according to Bernero if that number is met, officials would like to up the goal to $100,000.
“A way that people can give… provide tangible support for this family, this wife and this child and into this future” Mayor Bernero said.
Mayor Virg Bernero says false sites were created over night, but urges the public to donate to this site, and be assured with this one all funds go directly to the family
“There will be accolades in memorials, tributes, but when all of that is done, his family is changed unalterably, and one of the way it’s changed is financially” Bernero said.
Bernero says he has personally donated to the Lansing hero go fund me page and urges families to contribute to this site alone, and prevent fraudulent accounts
According to an official from the international fire fighter’s association, a Lansing fire honor guard is in the presence of Rodeman’s body, to watch over, and honor the fire fighter, until the moment he is buried.
The funeral has been set for 10 am Wednesday Sept 16th at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center, according to Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home.
