LUDINGTON, Mich. (WLNS) – The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search amid rough weather for a man reported overboard from a freighter in Lake Michigan near Ludington.
Our media partners at MLive report the search was suspended Sunday afternoon, with winds producing 7-foot waves. The man was reported missing from the Stewart J. Cort early Sunday morning when the freighter was near Big Sable Point in Mason County.
The boat is operated by Interlake Steamship Company. Tom Wynne, the company’s general counsel, says it has been told that the missing man intentionally jumped overboard.
Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole says detectives plan to meet the ship Monday morning when it docks in Sault Ste. Marie.
