WATCH: Surfer helps in rescue of two girls from Lake Michigan

GRAND HAVEN, MI (WLNS) – A Lake Michigan surfer has helped in the rescue of two girls who police say were caught in an apparent rip current.

Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke says the girls, ages 13 and 14, were reported to be 800 feet from the pier Thursday afternoon off of Grand Haven State Park. Bystanders and emergency personnel pulled them from the lake.

Zeb Boeskool of Grand Haven was surfing at the lake, and says he swam out and got the 13-year-old. Hawke says she wasn’t breathing, and she was taken to a hospital in serious condition. He tells the Grand Haven Tribune that her condition improved to stable by Thursday evening.

The 14-year-old was taken to the hospital for observation and was released.

A red flag was flying at the beach, warning people of dangerous swimming conditions.
