UPDATE: Jackson County Jail inmate dies by hanging

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – The Jackson Police and Jackson County Office of the Sheriff are investigating a death at the county jail Monday night.

According to investigators an inmate at the County Jail’s Wesley Street facility apparently hanged herself shortly after 9:00 p.m.

Deputies and medical staff tried to revive the woman, but were unsuccessful.

The inmate is identified as 35-year-old Renee Lynn Russell of Jackson County.

Russell had been in the jail since July 18 on a charge of first degree retail fraud.

An internal investigation is being conducted and results of that will be turned over to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
