JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – A Jackson County teenager who sparked the house fire that injured her father is pleading guilty but mentally ill to the crime.

Alexis Penn was back in court Tuesday morning to enter her plea as part of a deal with the prosecutor.

Our MLive media partner, the Jackson Citizen Patriot reports Penn’s mother stood next to her as the 15-year-old told the court she intentionally set fire to her father’s Hanover

Township home Nov. 2, knowing he and Penn’s sister were still inside.

Penn’s father spent several days in the hospital; Penn’s sister safely escaped the fire.

Penn’s former boyfriend, Damion Hopkins, is already spending 15 to 30 years in prison for his role in the arson.

A judge must still decide whether Penn should be sentenced as an adult.
