Divers resume search in lake for Detroit-area fire chief

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) – Oakland County divers have joined the search for a suburban Detroit fire chief who disappeared after jumping off a boat in Lake St. Clair to retrieve a hat.

Divers returned to the lake Sunday to search for Southfield Fire Chief Keith Rowley, who has been missing since Friday. He was on a boat with three people, off Harrison Township.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says it’s been a tough search because authorities don’t have specific coordinates. He says it’s a recovery at this point, not a rescue.

Rowley was well-known among Oakland County law enforcers, who joined the search effort.

Penny Lepper says she was fishing with her husband Friday when the wind was up to 20 mph and Lake St. Clair had whitecaps.
