WAUKESHA, Wis. (MEDIA GENERAL) – Ahead of a planned rally today, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker announced he is running for president via Twitter on Monday, July 13, 2015.
“I’m in,” the Republican presidential hopeful posted Monday morning. “I’m running for president because Americans deserve a leader who will fight and win for them.”
Walker also posted a video to his campaign web site in which he touts successes in his state and his willingness for bold reform and courage to take on the big issues.
“In the Republican field, there are some who are good fighters. They haven’t won those battles. And there are others who have won elections, but haven’t consistently taken on the big fights. (I’ve shown) we can do both. Now, I’m running for president to fight and win for the American people,” Walker said in the video titled “The Announcement.”
Walker will hold an announcement rally Monday night at the Waukesha County Expo Center in front of an expected crowd of 3,000 supporters.
Walker is the 15th Republican candidate officially in the field. Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore are expected to announce in the coming weeks.
Political insiders say the Republican field is wide open with no incumbents and no true top-tier candidates, which is the spark behind the crowded field. Most recent polls show former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and business tycoon Donald Trump with the highest approval ratings.
