Detroit Zoo reports investigation into data security breach

ROYAL OAK, MI (AP) – The Detroit Zoo says a data security breach involving a company that operates concessions and retail services for it and several other U.S. zoos is being investigated.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says Wednesday that nine zoos are affected. The zoo says that the investigation by Denver-based Service Systems Associates came after authorities contacted the zoos regarding stolen credit card information.

The Detroit Zoo says a preliminary forensic review shared with the Detroit Zoological Society reveals that malicious software, or malware, was detected in SSA’s software – affecting purchases made at zoo gift shops between March 23 and June 25.

SSA says credit card companies have been notified. It also says the malware that caused the breach was identified and removed.
