IONIA TWP., MI (WLNS) – Two men were injured after fireworks exploded near their kayaks in western Michigan Thursday.

It happened around 6:37 p.m. along Prairie Creek near the 2900 block of Welch Road.

They were on Prairie Creek northeast of Ionia, a witness said. Our affiliate WZZM says the men, ages 27 and 46 were on a kayaking trip and setting up fireworks. One of the fireworks exploded near their kayaks.

One of the victims suffered leg injuries and was being treated at a Grand Rapids hospital. The other man suffered back and stomach injuries and was taken to a hospital in Ionia.

Melinda Guy tells our media partners at MLive she was nearby when she heard the explosion. She says it “blew a big hole in one kayak and blew the whole front end off the other.”

She says other kayakers put a tourniquet on man’s leg wound after the explosion.

Guy described the fireworks as resembling a type of mortar.
