Select Michigan State Parks hosting no-fireworks July 4th celebrations

(WLNS) – Some of Michigan’s state parks are holding fireworks-free July 4th weekend celebrations for veterans and anyone else who wants to be away from the loud booms.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says designated state parks are far away from cities that set-off displays.

The parks include:

  • Bewabic State Park (Iron County)
  • Brighton Recreation Area-Bishop Lake Campground (Livingston County)
  • Cheboygan State Park (Cheboygan County)
  • Craig Lake State Park (Baraga County)
  • Hayes State Park (Lenawee County)
  • Lake Hudson State Park (Lenawee County)
  • Leelanau State Park (Leelanau County)
  • Menominee River State Recreation Area (Dickinson County)
  • Orchard Beach State Park (Manistee County)
  • Rifle River Recreation Area (Ogemaw County)
  • Sleepy Hollow State Park (Clinton County)
  • Wells State Park (Menominee County)

The idea behind the fireworks-free Independence Day celebration came from a veteran. The veteran spoke up about how fireworks and other loud noises can bring up bad memories from their military experience.

For veterans who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Post Traumatic Stress Injury, these loud noises can trigger intense feelings of fear, stress, anger or sadness, says the DNR.

The fireworks-free celebration is an effort to honor Michigan’s 660,000 veterans.
