Jackson County detectives search for double carjacking fugitive

JACKSON COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) – Investigators are naming a suspect in a pair of carjackings last week.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is calling 18-year-old Cody Michael Stewart a “wanted fugitive” in connection with the crimes.

It all began around 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 in the area of Horton Road near Vrooman Road. Investigators say a driver stopped after being flagged down by the thief. The man then pulled the driver from her car and sped off in the stolen vehicle. Moments later the stolen vehicle crashed into a ditch.

Detectives say the thief then flagged down a second driver, who also stopped. However, before the driver was pulled out of her car, she hit an emergency button that reached 911. Jackson County Central Dispatch was then able to track the thief as he took off in the car, which he dumped in Jackson.

Anyone with information of Stewart’s whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (517) 768-7901 or Crime Stoppers of Mid-Michigan at (517) 483-7867.
