Pets For Vets project begins in Jackson

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – Dogs and cats can be very therapeutic and calming for people, especially for veterans.

That’s the idea behind the Jackson County Animal Shelter’s “Pets for Vets” event.

A donation from “Friends of the pets in Jackson” is making the event possible through July 11.

And here’s how it works: the shelter is giving free adoptions of either 1 dog or 2 cats to veterans at the shelter on Spring Arbor Road. All you have to do is present your veteran ID or discharge papers along with a photo ID.

If you’re getting a dog you also have to pay a small fee for the license. It’s only $5 to $10.

Navy veteran Ed Weesner knows the value of that companionship. “Dogs are comforting to almost anybody and somebody like that they need a little extra some times just to get through each day,” explains Weesner.

The event lasts until July 11th or until the $2,000 donation runs out.

6 News Jackson bureau reporter Genna Hilgenbrink will have more on the event tonight, on 6 News at 5.
