Gov. Rick Snyder honors Michigan volunteers with awards

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP) – Gov. Rick Snyder is honoring Michigan volunteers, nonprofits and businesses with 2015 Governor’s Service Awards.

The awards are being given out Monday at “An Evening with the Stars” at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids.

The winners were selected from 40 finalists. All are being honored at the event.

Finalists in eight categories are recognized to acknowledge their commitment to solving community issues through volunteerism.

A Michigan teen who walked 57 miles carrying his brother on his back this year to raise awareness for cerebral palsy after a 40-mile last year is among those being honored. Hunter Gandee is one of two winners for the Youth Volunteer of the Year award.

The Council of Michigan Foundations also is presenting awards.
