BRIGHTON, MI (WLNS) – A Civil War soldier is being honored with a headstone at a local cemetery.

The Brighton Area Historical Society headstone restoration team created the headstone for John Sylvan Prosser.

Prosser fought in the battle of Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864 where he was wounded and died the next day in a field hospital.

He was buried on the battlefield, but there never was a record of exactly where his body was buried.

The headstone was placed in his family’s plot with his parents, sister and aunt.
